Years ago I took a river crossing training for backpackers from Rescue 3. I have taught these skills for REI Outdoor school, Sierra Club National Outings, EBSP, and International Alpine Guides. With this epic year in snowfall we certainly are expecting deep, cold, and swift rivers and streams. It takes less than 2 hours with a 1 hour presentation and and 1 hour at the most in the parking lot with interactive demonstrations of river and stream crossing techniques.
We start with Go/No Go, and how to read a river, identify hazards, choose a crossing if it is a "Go", and how to cross as an individual or as a team. I do not teach crossing with ropes as that can introduce its own hazards and we go over that, but we do cover and demonstrate using a throw rope downstream as a rescue precaution.
